major traffic disruption on the N1 national highway in Limpopo has been resolved after a serious truck accident earlier today.A critical corridor linking Gauteng with northern provinces and the Zimbabwe border was temporarily closed as emergency teams worked at the scene.
The crash occurred on the mountainous stretch of the N1 outside Louis TRichardt, near the Hendeik Verwoerd Tunnel
A truck lost control, collided with three other vehicles and plunged into a roadside ditch, subsequently catching fire.
Emergency services ,including traffic officers, paramedics and police were dispatched to the scene to manage rescue, treatment and traffic control.
The truck driver sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
At this stage, there has been no official confirmation on injuries to occupants of the other vehicles, but local reports indicated multiple collisions contributed to the severity of the incident.
The N1 was closed in both directions temporarily to clear the wreckage and allow safe passage for emergency teams.
Traffic has now been fully restored along this key national route, easing travel for commuters and freight vehicles.
This crash comes amid ongoing safety concerns on the N1 in Limpopo, especially around high-risk curves and mountainous sections north of Makhado. Following a recent bus accident where multiple passengers were killed after a vehicle veered off the road, calls have been made for engineering improvements and stricter road safety interventions at known danger spots.
Authorities continue to investigate the precise causes of today’s crash, including potential factors such as road conditions, vehicle speed, heavy traffic and driver control.
