The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has arrested 23 people in a high-profile probe into alleged corruption and fraud involving the Mpumalanga Department of Education.
The arrests are part of a broad investigation into an alleged R114 million tender corruption scheme linked to irregular contracts, inflated invoices and services that were never delivered.
The arrests were made during a coordinated Hawks operation across parts of the province.
Those detained include senior government officials, service providers and other individuals suspected of playing roles in the alleged corruption.
The matter concerns irregular tenders and contracts connected to the education department, with authorities alleging that public funds were siphoned away from projects intended to benefit schools.
The Mpumalanga Department of Education said it is closely monitoring developments but has stopped short of commenting on specifics, describing the matter as sub judice (before the courts). The department reiterated its commitment to ethical governance and accountability.
All arrested suspects are expected to appear in court as the Hawks and prosecuting authorities continue their legal process. Further arrests have not been ruled out as investigations progress.
