Six people have tragically lost their lives after a building under construction collapsed at Amethyst Business Park in Ormonde on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred when a concrete slab between floors gave way, causing a severe structural failure. Twelve people were reportedly inside the two-storey building at the time of the collapse.
spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said one person was rescued alive and rushed to hospital, while two others remain trapped under debris. Three individuals could not be located immediately after the collapse.
City officials have expressed deep concern over the incident and extended condolences to the victims’ families. A thorough investigation into the collapse is expected once rescue teams are able to safely complete their work.
At this stage, authorities have not released a definitive cause for the collapse. They have stressed, however, that understanding what went wrong will be crucial to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
This devastating event highlights ongoing concerns about construction safety and regulatory enforcement in South Africa, particularly in rapidly developing urban areas.
