When my sister became sick, our lives changed overnight.
She was once full of life — always laughing, always energetic. But suddenly she began losing weight, complaining about strange pains, and waking up screaming in the middle of the night. Some days she couldn’t even stand up.
My parents took her to different doctors and clinics around the Vaal Triangle, hoping someone could find the problem. Blood tests were done, medication was prescribed, but nothing seemed to help.Instead, she kept getting worse.
Weeks turned into months, and the doctors began saying they could not find anything physically wrong with her. My parents were desperate.
One day, someone told my father about a powerful traditional healer living deep in a rural area of Limpopo. They said people travelled from far places to see him when modern medicine failed.
My father decided we had nothing left to lose.
We left the Vaal late in the evening and drove for hours through dark roads and quiet villages until we reached a small settlement outside Polokwane. The healer had given us strict instructions: we had to arrive at exactly 3 a.m.
He said the ritual had to be done before sunrise.
When we arrived, the place was silent. The healer, an elderly man wrapped in traditional beads and animal skins, was already waiting for us. He spoke very little but looked at my sister for a long time, as if he could see something the rest of us could not.
Then he told us to follow him.
We walked behind him into a dark forest not far from his homestead. The only light came from a small lantern he carried. The deeper we walked, the quieter everything became.
When we reached the river, he told my sister to remove her clothes.
My parents hesitated, but the healer said it was necessary for the ritual. My sister, weak and frightened, did what he asked.
The healer began performing strange rituals — throwing bones onto the ground, chanting in a low voice, and sprinkling a mixture of herbs and water around her. At one point he burned herbs in a clay pot and the smoke filled the air with a strong smell.
What we saw that night was terrifying.
My sister began shaking violently and crying in a voice that did not sound like her own. The healer continued chanting louder and louder while shaking rattles made of animal horns.
Suddenly she collapsed to the ground.
The healer told us to put her in the water and continued the ritual for several minutes that felt like hours.
Then, just before the first light of dawn appeared, everything went quiet.
My sister slowly sat up, breathing heavily, but the strange expression on her face was gone. The healer looked exhausted but calm.
He turned to us and gave only one instruction:
“Go home. Do not look back.”
We quickly helped my sister get dressed and began walking back to the car. None of us dared to look behind us as we left the forest.
Even today, I still remember that night clearly the darkness, the chanting, and the fear we all felt.
But the strangest thing of all?
From that day on, my sister slowly began to recover.
