The Winnie Mandela community in Tembisa is drowning in grief after a heartbreaking tragedy claimed the life of a 10-year-old Grade 5 learner at Reagile Primary School.
What was supposed to be an ordinary school day ended in unimaginable sorrow when a soccer goalpost allegedly fell on the young boy while he was playing with other learners during break. Within moments, laughter on the playground turned into screams for help.
Paramedics rushed to the scene, but despite desperate efforts to save him, the little boy was declared dead. A life so young, so full of promise, gone in an instant.
He left home that morning like any other child ,with books in his bag and dreams in his heart. His family never imagined that goodbye would be their last.
Classmates have been left traumatized. Teachers are struggling to come to terms with the loss. Parents are shaken, asking painful questions about safety at schools. “Our children should be protected at all times,” one parent said through tears. “School is supposed to be a safe place.”
The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed deep condolences and promised a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police have also opened a case, and counselling services have been made available to learners and staff.
But no investigation can bring back a child.
Tonight, a family is preparing to bury a son. A classroom has an empty desk. A soccer field stands silent.
This tragedy is a painful reminder that children are precious and fragile. Their safety must never be taken lightly. Because when a child leaves for school, every parent expects one thing that they will return home alive.
And this time, he did not.
