Ridgevale Primary School Faces Serious Allegations of Learner Abuse and Financial Mismanagement.

the school environment is increasingly marked by fear and anxiety rather than safety and learning, with claims of corporal punishment, humiliation, and victimisation of learners. The complaints also include accusations that the principal has failed to take effective action to stop these harmful practices despite multiple formal complaints lodged with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).

Parents described a breakdown in trust, saying that many bullying incidents go unreported or unresolved, leaving learners feeling unsafe. “There’s a lot of bullying… and they don’t get reported because the kids are just like ‘I’ll tell the teacher and then what?’” one parent told reporter.

In addition to concerns over learner welfare, the SGB alleges gross financial mismanagement at the school. It is claimed that the principal attempted to use the school’s credit card to purchase personal items including alcohol and that irregular procurement practices have left the school in debt. A reported overdraft of more than R43,000 with a local store has been linked to unapproved transactions.

While the GDE confirmed that some complaints regarding corporal punishment were addressed in 2024, the department has yet to publicly provide detailed findings or actions taken in response to the broader set of grievances. Parents and SGB members say this delay has further eroded confidence in the education system’s ability to protect learners and manage school governance effectively.

The situation at Ridgevale Primary has sparked calls from the school community for greater transparency and accountability. The SGB and parents are pushing for the GDE to conclude its long-running investigation and implement recommendations to restore a safe learning environment and proper financial oversight.

As the dispute continues, many local families remain anxious about the school’s culture and leadership, urging swift action to ensure the safety and well-being of the learners entrusted to its care.
