From Domestic Worker to Professional Lawyer: A Single Mother’s Journey of Strength and Triumph

I am a single mother of three, and my life has been anything but easy. I grew up in hardship—days where the struggle felt heavier than my shoulders could carry. My upbringing taught me endurance, but it also left me determined to break the cycle for myself and for my children.

In my early years of adulthood, I worked as a domestic worker. Some days, to make ends meet, I would collect currants just to bring food home. Life demanded strength I didn’t always think I had, but for the sake of my children, I found it anyway. Every single day.

But deep inside, I knew I wanted more. I wanted to rewrite my story.

So I worked tirelessly, saving every rand I could. When others slept, I studied. When I felt overwhelmed, I reminded myself that my children were watching me, learning from me. Slowly but surely, I built my future—brick by brick, sacrifice by sacrifice.

Today, I stand proudly as a professional lawyer.

I can provide for my children without fear, without depending on anyone. I put all three of them through school, giving them the opportunities I never had. My greatest joy is seeing them grow without the burdens I carried.

And my journey didn’t end with my own family. I support children who come from the kind of background I came from—kids who are struggling, kids who need hope, kids who remind me of the girl I once was. I help them because somebody needed to help me, and no one did. So now I am that support.

My story is a reminder that where you start does not define where you will end. I am living proof that determination, education, and hard work can transform even the humblest beginnings.

I rose. And now I'm helping others rise too.
