Tragic Scholar Transport Crash in Vanderbijlpark Claims the Lives of Schoolchildren

 VANDERBIJLPARK, Gauteng — 19 January 2026

A horrific road accident early this morning claimed the lives of at least 13 schoolchildren when a private scholar transport minibus taxi collided head-on with a side-tipper truck in the Vaal area near Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg. 

Morning commute turns to tragedy

The collision occurred at approximately 07:00 on Fred Droste Road, a busy route frequently used by vehicles transporting pupils to school. According to preliminary reports, the minibus taxi was attempting to overtake several vehicles when it collided with the oncoming truck, causing catastrophic damage. 

Emergency services  including paramedics, traffic officials, and police , responded swiftly to the scene. The road was cordoned off while forensic teams and investigators worked through the wreckage. Casualties and hospitalisations

Authorities confirmed that 11 pupils were pronounced dead at the scene, with two more succumbing to their injuries later in hospital, bringing the toll to 13 confirmed fatalities. 

Several other learners and the minibus taxi driver were injured and taken to nearby medical facilities. Police say some remain in serious condition. 

The learners were on their way to various primary and secondary schools in the area when the tragedy struck. 

Official response.Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited the crash site, expressing profound sorrow at the loss of young lives and offering condolences to families and school communities. Lesufi described the scene as “unbearable” and emphasised the urgent need for stronger oversight of private scholar transport services. 

Police have opened a culpable homicide investigation as they continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the crash. Both the minibus taxi driver and the truck driver are expected to be questioned as part of the ongoing probe 

Broader concerns about scholar transport safety

The tragedy has renewed attention on the safety and regulation of scholar transport in South Africa. Officials and road safety advocates have called for stricter enforcement of vehicle roadworthiness, driver training standards, and oversight of private operators to prevent similar incidents in the future.
