Managing Diabetes

Managing diabetes is about balancing healthy lifestyle choices, medical treatment, and consistent monitoring. The approach depends on whether it’s type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes, but the  principles are similar:

 Key Steps to Manage Diabetes

  1. Healthy Eating

    • Focus on whole foods: vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, beans, nuts, and fruits (in moderation).
    • Limit sugary drinks, processed foods, and refined carbs.
    • Spread meals evenly throughout the day to avoid blood sugar spikes.

  1. Physical Activity

    • Aim for 30 minutes of exercise most days (walking, swimming, cycling, or strength training).
    • Exercise helps improve insulin sensitivity and lowers blood sugar.

  1. Monitoring Blood Sugar

    • Check your blood glucose as recommended by your doctor.
    • Keep a log of your readings to see how food, activity, and stress affect your levels.
  2. Medication & Insulin

    • Take prescribed medication or insulin exactly as directed.
    • Never skip doses, even if you feel fine.
  3. Weight Management

    • Even a small weight loss (5–10% of body weight) can improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes.
  4. Stress & Sleep

    • Stress can raise blood sugar; try deep breathing, yoga, or meditation.
    • Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night. Poor sleep affects blood sugar balance.
  5. Regular Health Checkups

    • Get your average blood sugar test over 3 months as recommended.
    • Monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, eyes, kidneys, and feet regularly.

Emergency Tip: Know the signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)—shaking, sweating, dizziness, confusion—and keep glucose tablets or a green apple ,a sweet and water  with you at all times.
